From: The Pontiac Yacht Club Membership Committee

The Pontiac Yacht Club was chartered in 1934. It is the largest registered Lightning fleet in the world. The Sparkman and Stephens designed Lightning is the sailboat predominately used because of its versatility, strong International Class Organization and its suitability to family sailing. The club schedules over sixty races a season, from early May to mid October on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Pontiac Yacht Club has an active small boat fleet which race on Monday evenings and comprehensive Junior and Adult Sailing programs.

The Pontiac Yacht Club is a working Club. The membership is responsible for most Club projects. Your participation is important and mandatory. As a member your attendance is expected at the following events:

        1. Spring Work Party – 3rd or 4th week of April
        2. Meet/Welcome New Associates Dinner
3 Fall Work Party – 3rd weekend in October

The Whitecap Regatta is our signature Regatta, held on the weekend immediately following Labor Day. It is highly competitive and attracts outstanding sailors from the region. All members are encouraged to participate in one way or another. The festivities end with a casual dinner party on the grounds Saturday night, open to all, sailors and spectators alike!

New members are encouraged to learn about and assist with race operations on the Committee Boat by observing and helping during the active racing season. On the job training is provided by experienced members.

Interested in crewing? There are many opportunities to crew for various skippers throughout the racing season.

The beautiful beach is shallow, perfect for small children. The “deep end” at the end of the dock is perfect for cannon balls and lap swimming to and from the floating dock! Also the site of the annual Big Kahuna Belly Flop Contest! The shaded grounds complete with picnic tables, lawn chairs, permanent barbecue grills, swings and play structure make Pontiac Yacht Club a perfect place for hot summer nights and weekend picnics.

The Club social calendar is always evolving. Some things, however, are sacred; Spring Work Party, Memorial Day Potluck, the Annual 4th of July Potluck, New Associates Dinner, Labor Day Potluck, Fall Work Party, and the Annual Banquet in November.

The membership is made up of men and women from diverse backgrounds, many of which volunteer their particular expertise to benefit the Club. The atmosphere is friendly and informal.

The main bulletin boards at the Clubhouse, the Club newsletter, the “Telltales”, and the website are your sources of Club information. New members need to read and understand the by-laws and rules of the Pontiac Yacht Club. These are printed in the Club directory.
