PYC hosts 2021 Championship of Championship Regatta
Our reputation for hosting top class regattas has led to US Sailing selecting Pontiac Yacht Club to host the 2021 Championship of Champions Regatta. The event will be held on September 16th to 19th.
The regatta consists of 19 invited National, North American or World Champions from different one design classes plus one special guest skipper to all compete in Lightnings on Cass Lake.
This is a huge honor and is a result of being awarded the “US Sailing One Design Regatta of the Year” for our 2018 hosting of the International Lightning Class Associations Women’s, Junior’s and Master’s North American Championship.
PYC will be providing all the boats and equipment for the event and our generous and loyal members have stepped up to loan their boats. To make everything equal, all boats will have brand new sails from North Sails. For many of the competitors this will be the first time they may have sailed a Lightning in anger. It will be very interesting to see how these top sailors can adapt to a new boat and get the best performance out of it. Not to mention it will be great fun.
On the fun side of things, there will be a happy hour (free drinks) each day after racing and on Saturday evening we will host a party with a slap-up dinner and a lively band. All PYC members and friends are invited to the party and can also enjoy the steak and chicken dinner at a very reasonable cost (TBD), but must book ahead of time to ensure sufficient food is available. More details closer to the event.

Hello All PYC members,
As many of you know, we are getting very close to the big event this year, the US Sailing Championship of Champions Regatta to be held at our club on September 16th to 19thwhen 16 of the best sailors in the country will be competing for the ultimate North American Championship.
As you might expect, preparations are well underway. All of the applications are in and the competitors have been selected by US Sailing. Of these, eight are Lightning sailors. They include: Matt Fisher (World and National Champion), Ched Proctor (National Champion, Masters Champion), Tim Scanlon (National Champion), Joe Stark (Masters Champion), Rob Ruhlman (Past ILCA President), Dave Peck, Nathan Ireland, and our own Mark Allen.
US Sailing has selected Phlotilla.com as the regatta website where all information for the regatta can be found. In addition, of course, information is available on our website at pyc54.org where you can pre-order tee shirts and dinners.
This regatta is very different to any we have held before as the competitors will be sailing Lightnings loaned by our members. To keep the competition as equal as possible, the sailors will move to a different boat every couple of races, thus leveling out any difference in equipment. This also means that to make things work efficiently, we need to more than the usual 1 or 2 safety boats on the water. For this event we will need 5 boats in order to quickly and efficiently switch crews around from boat to boat. So, I am looking for volunteers to man the safety boats. Please contact me at email@example.com or 248 342 8456 or see me at PYC. All volunteers will receive a free tee-shirt and be well fed and watered. How can you turn down an offer like that!!!
All the food from breakfast on Thursday to lunch on Sunday is already planned and well in hand. Entertainment in the form of live bands have been booked for Friday and Saturday evening. The meals on both of those days are open to all PYC members at $25 per person. Friday evening is our popular and famous Pig Roast and Saturday is a choice of steak or chicken from the grille along with all the trimmings that our Blue Apron ladies prepare. Dinner places are limited so please book your spot early.
Come along and cheer for Mark Allen, have some great food, free beer, a fun time and meet some of the best sailors in North America.
In addition, we will be offering tee shirts for sale with the regatta design, as well as a limited number of cocktail glasses printed with the regatta logo.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.
